McCaffery Interests in partnership with U.S. Steel is seeking to redevelop the former the U.S. Steel Southworks site into an exciting lakeside community. The U.S. Steel Southworks mill originally began producing steel in 1901 but shut down in 1992 due to the declining steel industry. The colossal scale of the site and proximity to downtown (~ 10 miles) along with its lakeside location make it one of the most desirable pieces of undeveloped real estate in the City of Chicago, if not the nation.
In cooperation with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP and Sasaki Associates, Inc., the team has created a master plan for 500 acres which includes approximately 14,000 single family dwellings and high rise units, 15,000,000 SF of retail, 100 acres of beautifully landscaped open space/parks with bike paths, a 1,500 slip boat marina and a new high school. The redevelopment will provide an economic boost to the City and will revitalize the historic South Shore. The Market Common SouthShore is located between 79th and 87th Street on Lake Michigan’s shore.
