McCaffery Interests, in partnership with Pennsylvania-based
Westrum Development Company, Lubert-Adler Funds and United States
Steel, is seeking to redevelop the former US Steel Southworks site
into an exciting new lakeside neighborhood. In cooperation with
Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP and Sasaki Associates, Inc., the
team has created a master plan for the 275 acres which will
include thousands of new residences, a retail center, a boat slip
and new harbor, extensive lakefront parks, bike paths, beautifully
landscaped open spaces and restaurants. The project will be
carried out in four phases in coordination with the completion of
the new US41.
Southworks is located between 79th Street and 87th Street on
Lake Michigan’s shore. The scale of the site and proximity to
downtown (~10 miles), along with its lakeside location make it one
of the most desirable pieces of undeveloped real estate in the
City of Chicago, if not the nation.
The site was formerly a USX steel mill which originated in 1901
but was shuttered in 1992 during a decline in the steel industry.
The redevelopment will provide an economic boost to the City and
will revitalize the historic Southeast community.
The development team anticipates submitting an application to
the City of Chicago for a Planned Development this year and
commencing construction in late 2007.
