Verde Pointe Development Awarded Prestigious LEED Green Building Certification During Ceremony

Environmentally sound design cornerstone of Arlington, Va. mixed-use complex

Arlington, Va. (July 29, 2016) – Arlington’s Verde Pointe residential and mixed-use development was formally presented with the LEED Gold certification by Mahesh Ramanujam, COO of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) at an event held on the property yesterday. Located at the corner of Lee Highway and North Veitch Street, the distinction applies to the entire Verde Pointe development completed in 2015: 162-unit luxury residential tower, 36 townhome-style flats and its adjoining 14,000 square-foot MOM’s Organic Market.

The LEED rating system, developed by the USGBC, is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and energy performance. Verde Pointe’s residential and mixed-use buildings were built under separate criteria—LEED for New Construction for the main residential building and LEED for Homes Mid-rise for the mixed-use building. Both buildings met or exceeded the environmental standards required for certification.

“I want to commend McCaffery Interests, and the entire Verde Pointe design and development project team, on achieving LEED Gold certification,” said Ramanujam. “McCaffery Interests is committed to providing its residents with the highest quality living experience and to creating a more sustainable, healthier and energy-efficient built environment. USGBC applauds this team of leaders for raising the bar for sustainable, efficient multi-housing and mixed-use development.

LEED Gold certification recognizes the commitment to sustainability on behalf of the development’s owners, McCaffery Interests and Bergmann’s Inc. A cornerstone of the project’s vision is to provide residents with the highest quality living experience through the incorporation of environmentally sound and reductive design elements, including low-flow fixtures, occupancy sensors and Energy Star-rated equipment. Residents and visitors also benefit from improved air quality, sustainable landscaping, and locally sourced materials, furniture and finishes.

“It was important for Verde Pointe to not only provide amenity-rich residential living space, but to do so in an environmentally conscious manner in order to serve the community now and for decades to come,” says John Ziegenhein, McCaffery Interests’ Managing Director of Corporate and Development Finance. “Receipt of LEED Gold certification is a proud achievement for all of us who took part in bringing the development to life.”

LEED is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. More than 78,600 commercial and institutional projects are currently participating in LEED, comprising more than 15 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 states and more than 160 countries.
