Potomac Yard

The North Potomac Yard Master Plan, adopted by the City of Alexandria City Council in May 2010, provided the framework to transform an existing 600,000 square-foot retail center into a vibrant, walkable mixed-use, smart-growth community that complimented adjacent neighborhoods and created a regional destination. The 69-acre transit-oriented master plan, intended to guide public and private investment and development decisions for the next 15- 25 years, was the result of a three-year collaboration between the City of Alexandria, developers McCaffery and RREEF, and an intensive community outreach initiative.

The plan called for a unique network of streets, parks and plazas and provided a complementary mix of land uses, community amenities and a range of housing options. Within the 7,525,000 square feet of development, the plan provided 1,930,000 square feet of office space, 930,000 square feet of retail, 170,000 square feet of hotel, 4,495 residential units, nearly 10 acres of open space as well as a future Metrorail Station and a high-capacity transitway. The plan was awarded Preliminary Recognition by the Washington Smart Growth Alliance in 2010.
